Who doesn’t remember those familiar and comforting words, “It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood; a beautiful day for a neighbor. Would you be mine? Could you be mine?” Even as a child, we wanted to belong.
But it was so much more than wanting to belong, it is someone else wanting us to belong with them. While most of us may have never met Fred Rogers in person, we felt genuinely appreciated and welcomed by him. He wanted us (you and me) to be his very neighbor!
What a gift, and it is gift that the Bible teaches us to offer to our neighbors. After all, it is what Jesus modeled and taught while here on earth, and then sent the Holy Spirit to empower us to do. So, lace up those sneakers, grab your favorite hand-knitted sweater your mom made you and let’s learn how we can be the neighbors that Jesus calls us to be.
